God Makes All Things New: Shia LaBeouf’s Entrance into the Catholic Church

It is an odd time of year—it’s not yet the end of winter, but the holidays are behind us, and spring feels a little far off. It’s a time of waiting, of recalibrating our expectations, or maybe even falling off those New Year’s resolutions. For some of us, it’s a moment to start over, while for others, it’s about finding our footing again.

For us Capuchins (Western America Province), this time of year also brings to mind a significant moment from early 2024—Shia LaBeouf’s entrance into the Catholic Church through the sacrament of Confirmation, conferred by Bishop Robert Barron. It was a moment that marked a deeper commitment to his faith, and a step forward in his journey of renewal.

A couple of years ago, we Capuchins had the privilege of walking alongside Shia as he portrayed Padre Pio in the film Padre Pio. Padre Pio, a Capuchin friar, is an example of radical surrender to God’s will. This role and his time spent with us led Shia to explore not only Padre Pio’s life but also the message of surrender, repentance, and transformation that the saint exemplified. Our very own Br. Alex Rodriguez, who accompanied Shia, shared: “Why does God choose a broken man to play Padre Pio in a movie? Because Shia’s journey reflects what Padre Pio is telling us: the path to heaven begins with repentance and dying to oneself. Just as Padre Pio surrendered his life to God and sought to grow in holiness, so too has Shia begun that path.”

Padre Pio’s life shows us the power of surrender. He chose a life of humility and prayer, turning away from comforts and desires to follow God’s will. He gave up the temptations of a life of ease and chose the path of penance, trusting that God’s grace would sustain him.

Just as Shia walked alongside Padre Pio in the film, reflecting on the saint’s surrender, we too are called to make that same choice. Whether we are struggling with resolutions, feeling stuck, or looking for direction, God is offering us the grace to begin again.

As St. Augustine said, “Our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.” Only God can fulfill the restlessness within us, and in Him we find our true peace.

Let’s pray for Shia and for all who are on a journey of faith. May this time of waiting bring us closer to the renewal God offers, trusting that He makes all things new.
