Celebrating 102 Years of Capuchin Franciscans at St. Lawrence Parish in Watts, CA

Earlier this month, we celebrated 102 years of Capuchin friars serving the parish and community of St. Lawrence Brindisi Catholic Church. Since 1921, our friars have been a vital part of life in Watts, ministering to the people of the community.

The celebration included a parish carnival with food, rides, games, and opportunities to connect:

  • Fr. Robert Sewe, pastor of St. Lawrence, led Benediction and Adoration in the church and spent time cooking with parishioners.
  • Fr. Vic and Br. Alex from the Vocations Team hosted a booth to share insights about the Capuchin vocation and encourage discernment.

With eight weekend Masses—five in Spanish and three in English—St. Lawrence Parish is always active. Our friars dedicate their efforts to the sacraments, pastoral care, and the unique needs of this vibrant community.

Over the decades, the Capuchins have remained present during key moments in Watts’ history. During times of turmoil, such as the Watts Riots, they stayed to support the parish and its people.

As Capuchins, we’re proud to humbly serve and walk with this community every day. Here’s to the next 100+ years!
