Padre Pio and the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Saint Padre Pio showed the Church what it means to live in union with Christ. The Capuchin friar who bore the wounds of Christ in his own body spent his life pouring himself out for souls, and at the very center of that life was a deep and tender devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His love for the Heart of Christ shaped his prayer, his suffering, and his daily care for the countless people who came to him for help.

A Devotion Lived Day After Day

Padre Pio is closely associated with the Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a prayer he recited every day for all those who asked for prayers . The novena itself was given to the Church through Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, the saint most responsible for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart, and Padre Pio made it part of the rhythm of his daily life. Those who recommended themselves to his prayers were carried straight to the Heart of Jesus through this beloved devotion.

The novena draws its power from three promises Jesus makes in the Gospel. As one reflection on Padre Pio’s devotion explains, the prayer is built on Christ’s own words to ask and receive, to seek and find, to knock and have the door opened. Each of the nine prayers begins with one of these scriptural assurances, followed by an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be, and closes with the simple act of trust that became a hallmark of Padre Pio’s spirituality: Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Trust in the Heart of Christ

That phrase captures the whole spirit of Padre Pio’s life. When suffering and crosses pressed in on him, and when others looked to him for hope, he placed his confidence entirely in the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. He did not simply recommend this trust to others. He lived it himself, and the friar who counseled souls to pray, hope, and not worry was a model of what that surrender looks like.

For Padre Pio, devotion to the Sacred Heart was never an abstraction. It was a way of loving Christ in return for the love that flowed from his pierced side, and a way of bringing every need, his own and the needs of others, before the One who cannot refuse compassion to the afflicted.

Praying with Padre Pio Today

The faithful are invited to take up this same prayer, joining themselves spiritually to the devotion that meant so much to Padre Pio. The novena can be prayed at any time of year, though it is traditionally prayed in the nine days leading up to the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which falls during the month of June, the month the Church dedicates to the Sacred Heart.

To pray with Padre Pio is to learn his trust. It is to bring our intentions to the Heart of Christ with the same confidence he showed, certain that the Heart of Jesus is always ready to receive us.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
