Thanksgiving and the Eucharist: A Catholic Reflection

Thanksgiving is a day many Americans associate with gathering around the table, sharing meals, and giving thanks for life’s blessings. While its historical roots lie in the Pilgrims’ survival and thankfulness after their first harvest, for Catholics, Thanksgiving invites us to reflect on the deeper act of giving thanks, rooted in the Eucharist—the source and summit of our faith.

The True Thanksgiving: Christ’s Gift in the Eucharist

The word “Eucharist” translates to “Thanksgiving,” and for Catholics, it goes beyond a moment of worship—it is the real presence of Christ: body, blood, soul, and divinity. Through the Eucharist, we encounter the extraordinary humility of God, who lowered Himself to become man, dwelt among us, and continues to offer Himself completely for our salvation. Our Seraphic Father, St. Francis of Assisi, deeply revered this gift, seeing it as the ultimate expression of God’s love and self-giving. For Francis, the Eucharist was an invitation to respond with lives rooted in love and service.

Attending Mass on Thanksgiving, though not obligatory, provides a meaningful way to align our celebration with the heart of Catholic worship. By participating in the Eucharist, we join in Christ’s offering of Himself to the Father.

To live Thanksgiving as Catholics, we can incorporate God into our holiday celebration by starting the day with Mass, praying before our meal, giving to those who may not have a meal, and giving thanks to God for His blessings—most of all, for the gift of the Eucharist.

We pray you have a blessed Thanksgiving.
