The Capuchin Franciscans live each day with prayer woven into their ordinary life. Here’s a guide inspired by the way the friars pray, one you can bring into your own routine.
Begin the Day with the Liturgy of the Hours
The friars start by praying the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church’s daily prayer. It sets the tone for the day and places it in God’s hands.
Spend Time in Silent Prayer
After Morning Prayer, friars spend half an hour before the Blessed Sacrament. This quiet time allows them to listen to God before beginning their work.
Go to Mass
The Eucharist is at the center of Capuchin life. Each day, friars gather for Mass. If you are able, try attending Mass during the week to draw closer to Christ.
Offer Your Work
Prayer continues beyond the chapel. Friars turn their daily work into an offering to God. Blessed Bernard of Offida, who worked in the kitchen, dedicated his labor for the brothers. You can do the same by offering your own daily tasks with love.
Return to Prayer
At the end of the workday, friars return to prayer. They pray the Liturgy of the Hours and spend time again in silence before the Blessed Sacrament. This is a moment to hand the day back to God.
Give Thanks at Meals
Meals are a time of gratitude. Before eating, friars give thanks. Afterward, they remember deceased brothers in prayer. This habit reminds us that prayer is meant to carry into every part of life.
End with Night Prayer
Some friaries close the day with Night Prayer. It entrusts the night to God and prepares the heart for rest. Even a short prayer before bed can bring peace and stillness at the end of the day.
