Pope Leo XIV has declared a Special Year of St. Francis of Assisi to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death. The observance runs through January 10, 2027, and includes the opportunity for the faithful to receive a plenary indulgence.
St. Francis of Assisi is the Seraphic Father of the Capuchin Franciscan Order. His life of conversion, poverty, and devotion to Christ continues to shape Franciscan spirituality and the mission of the Capuchins today.
How to Receive the Plenary Indulgence
During the Special Year, Catholics may obtain a plenary indulgence by fulfilling the usual conditions:
- Receive sacramental Confession
- Receive Holy Communion
- Pray for the intentions of the Pope
- Make a pilgrimage to a Franciscan church or a church dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi
These practices accompany a sincere turning toward God and deeper participation in the sacramental life of the Church.
