Our Seraphic Father, St. Francis of Assisi, in his deep love for God, gave the world a lasting gift that forever changed how we celebrate the birth of Christ. In 1223, in Greccio, Italy, St. Francis created the first live Nativity scene, an immersive representation of God becoming man.
Inspired by his travels to the Holy Land in 1219 and 1220, where he witnessed the sites of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection, St. Francis sought to make the story of the Nativity something people could experience, not just hear about. He wanted to bring the story of Christ’s humble birth to life, allowing others to feel the poverty Christ embraced for our sake.
As Christmas approached in 1223, St. Francis asked his friend Giovanni Velita to help him create a live Nativity. They set up a cave with animals, a hay-filled manger, and real people portraying Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. St. Francis himself would proclaim the Gospel, inviting all to enter into the story of Christ’s birth.
On that holy night, people gathered with candles and torches to witness the live Nativity. It was more than just a display; it was an encounter with the miracle of the Incarnation. An eyewitness account reports that during the Mass, a real infant appeared in the manger, and St. Francis, filled with joy, embraced the child.
The miracles didn’t end there. In the days following, people reported healings from touching the straw in the manger. Hay placed on sick animals or women in labor brought healing. The live Nativity became a lasting reminder of God’s presence among us.
St. Francis’s Nativity scene spread quickly, becoming a long-standing tradition. It wasn’t just a display of statues, but an invitation to experience Christ’s birth firsthand, to witness His humility, poverty, and love. As we celebrate Christmas, we are invited to do the same. St. Francis’s Nativity scene calls us to reflect on the simplicity of Christ’s birth and the love that came with it. Just as St. Francis sought to make the Incarnation real for the people of Greccio, we too are called to encounter Christ and bring Him to others.
