Iven Morales, a convert to the Catholic Church and former professional soccer player, is beginning postulancy with the Capuchin Franciscans. A member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Pomona, he found community in his parish’s young adult group, deepened his faith through daily Mass and adoration, and grew in responsibility through his work and family life. Now, he begins discerning whether God is calling him to religious life with the Capuchins.
Q&A with Iven
Where are you from?
I’m from Pomona, California. My home parish is St. Joseph’s, where I’ve been part of the young adult group, serving at Mass, and spending time in adoration.
How long have you been Catholic?
Before recently becoming Catholic, I lived somewhat irresponsibly and tried to avoid the reality of growing up. Since becoming Catholic, I’ve been working on growing — especially in my relationship with my family and in taking greater responsibility for myself and others.
What first attracted you to the Capuchins?
What first caught my attention was their charism. Even from a young age, I felt drawn to living simply and being close to the poor. When I became Catholic, the Capuchins were one of the first communities I encountered. What stood out to me was their joy, their prayer routine, their desire to serve Christ in the poor. I saw something of myself in their way of life. It seemed like a natural fit — like the Lord had been preparing me for it in small ways throughout my life. And yes, I also liked the idea of detachment, living simply, and even their beards.
What are you most looking forward to in postulancy?
I’m really looking forward to spending time with Br. Peter—he’s a holy man, and I hope to learn a lot from him. More than anything, I’m looking forward to seeing if this is truly the life God desires for me. There’s definitely a fear that comes with discerning whether God is calling someone to give their whole life to Him. But I believe God deserves everything I have to give. Entering postulancy feels like my way of saying: “Lord, I’m afraid—but You deserve everything. So here I am, giving You a chance. If this is the life You want for me, show me.”
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Introspective, interpersonal, and lighthearted.
What do you enjoy in your free time?
I enjoy playing soccer, frisbee, football, and ice skating. I also like camping, watching old kids’ movies, YouTube, eating with friends, and even just taking naps.
Who are your favorite saints?
St. John Paul II, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Padre Pio, and St. John Vianney.
Please keep Iven and all our postulants in prayer as they begin this first stage of religious life,
