Thanksgiving invites us to pause and recognize the blessings that come to us in simple and ordinary ways. For the Capuchin Franciscan family, this awareness is part of daily life. Simplicity opens our hearts to God’s generosity, and fraternity teaches us that every gift is meant to be shared.
In our tradition, gratitude finds its deepest expression in the Eucharist. The word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek eucharistia, which means thanksgiving. At every Mass, we bring the needs, joys, and small offerings of our lives to the altar. Christ receives them and gives Himself to us. From this, we learn to look at the world with grateful eyes.
Thanksgiving Day reflects this way of seeing. A meal shared with loved ones, the warmth of family, and the care shown in preparing a table all point to a greater truth. God provides for us each day. God gathers us through simple gifts that carry deep meaning. The Capuchin way is to notice these gifts, thank God for them, and offer our lives in service to others.
St. Padre Pio encouraged this spirit when he said, “Always thank the Lord and bless His name.” His words remind us that gratitude is a path we walk, not a feeling we wait for.
As we celebrate this holiday, may the Eucharist shape our hearts so that every day becomes an act of thanksgiving.
