Which Marian Apparition Speaks to You?

The Catholic Church has recognized a number of Marian apparitions, moments when the Blessed Virgin Mary has appeared to individuals around the world. These encounters often come with messages of prayer, repentance, and a renewed call to follow Jesus. And while each apparition of Mary happened in a particular place and time, her message still resonates today.

Fr. Victor and Fr. Niko recently sat down for a short video to share their favorite Marian apparitions, and we’re going to note them below. (If you haven’t seen the video yet, you can watch it here.) Each title of Mary reflects a part of her heart, a mother who walks with us, intercedes for us, and always leads us back to Christ.

Let this be your Lenten challenge: choose one Marian apparition that speaks to you. Learn its story. Ask Mary under that title to pray for you.

What is a Marian apparition?

A Marian apparition is a reported supernatural appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These apparitions are sometimes accompanied by messages, signs, or miracles. The Catholic Church investigates such reports carefully, and some are officially recognized as worthy of belief. While not required to be believed, approved Marian apparitions can strengthen our faith and deepen our relationship with Christ.

Catholic Marian Apparitions to Discover

Our Lady of Kibeho (Rwanda)

In the early 1980s, the Virgin Mary appeared to several schoolgirls in Kibeho, Rwanda. She called herself the “Mother of the Word” and urged prayer, repentance, and conversion. Her warnings came before the tragic Rwandan genocide, revealing a heart that grieved for what was to come.

Prayer: Our Lady of Kibeho, lead me back to your Son through prayer and repentance. Stay with me in times of sorrow and help me carry hope.

Our Lady of the Angels

This ancient title has been used for centuries and is deeply connected to the Franciscan family. One of the most important sites associated with this title is the Portiuncula chapel in Assisi, where St. Francis of Assisi found peace and renewal. Mary, surrounded by angels in heaven, still draws near to earth as a mother who watches over us. For the Capuchins, Our Lady of the Angels is the patroness of our province and a constant reminder of her care and closeness.

Prayer: Our Lady of the Angels, remind me that heaven is near. Walk with me and bring me closer to the heart of Christ.

Our Lady of Lourdes (France)

Mary appeared to a young girl named Bernadette Soubirous in a small grotto in Lourdes, France. She identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and pointed Bernadette to a spring of water that continues to bring healing and hope to millions of pilgrims every year. Lourdes has become a place of deep physical and spiritual renewal, especially for the sick and suffering.

Prayer: Our Lady of Lourdes, bring healing where I am hurting, body, mind, or soul. Help me trust in God’s mercy.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

This title comes from a 15th-century Byzantine icon of Mary holding the Child Jesus, who clings to her as He glimpses the instruments of His future Passion. The Archangels Michael and Gabriel flank them, and Mary looks outward, her eyes meeting ours. For generations, Catholics have turned to her under this title in times of distress. Her gaze is steady, her help unending. She is a refuge for those who feel overwhelmed or afraid.

Prayer: Our Lady of Perpetual Help, be near to me in my weakness. Intercede for me when I feel overwhelmed.

Our Lady of Victory

This title is rooted in a major historical moment, the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Christian forces, greatly outnumbered, defeated the Ottoman Empire’s fleet after Pope Pius V called on all of Europe to pray the Rosary. After the victory, he declared the day a feast in honor of Our Lady of Victory, later known as Our Lady of the Rosary. Mary’s intercession was seen as a key reason for the unlikely triumph. This title reminds us that prayer is powerful, especially when it feels like we are up against impossible odds.

Prayer: Our Lady of Victory, help me fight the battles I face with trust in God, not in myself. Teach me to pray with courage.

Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico)

In 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to a man named Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City. She spoke to him in his native language and wore the clothing of his people. When Juan Diego presented her message to the local bishop, a miraculous image of Mary appeared on his tilma, a cloth that remains intact nearly 500 years later. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas and a powerful witness that Mary draws near to the poor, the humble, and the overlooked.

Prayer: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas, draw near to those who feel unseen. Help me to trust your love.

Our Lady of Las Lajas (Colombia)

In the 1700s, a mother and her deaf-mute daughter were caught in a storm while traveling through a canyon in southern Colombia. Taking shelter in a cave, they reportedly saw a vision of the Virgin Mary, and the daughter was miraculously healed. Later, an image of Mary with Jesus, St. Dominic, and St. Francis was found imprinted in the stone wall of the cave. The site became a place of pilgrimage and prayer, and today, a stunning church is built into the cliffs above the river.

Prayer: Our Lady of Las Lajas, when I don’t have the words, stay with me. Let your quiet presence bring peace to my heart.

Our Lady of Knock (Ireland)

In 1879, villagers in Knock, Ireland, saw a vision of Mary, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist standing in silence near the parish church. Unlike other apparitions, Mary said nothing, she simply stood with them. For many, Knock is a reminder that God is near even in silence, and that sometimes, presence alone is the comfort we need.

Prayer: Our Lady of Knock, in the silence, be my comfort. Stand beside me when I feel alone.

You don’t have to know everything about every apparition. But this Lent, take a moment to pause and listen. One of these Marian apparitions might speak to something you didn’t even realize you needed. That could be Mary drawing close, as she always does, to lead you back to her Son.
