St. Felix of Cantalice didn’t write books or preach homilies. But his joy, humility, and deep trust in God left an unforgettable mark on the people of Rome and on the Church.
He became the first Capuchin friar to be canonized a saint. And he’s still remembered today by one of the most surprising nicknames in the history of the saints: Brother Ass.
Who Was St. Felix of Cantalice?
Born in 1515 in Italy, Felix joined the newly established Capuchin Franciscans, a branch of the Franciscan order. He was given the humble task of seeking alms, gathering food and donations for the friars and the poor.
Every day, Felix walked through the streets of Rome with a sack over his shoulder, joyfully greeting each person he met and placing his trust entirely in divine providence.
Why Did He Call Himself “Brother Ass”?
Felix often referred to himself as “Brother Ass,” likening himself to the donkey that carried Christ into Jerusalem – useful, but unworthy of praise. “My donkey self must be flogged,” he once said, “for it is lazy and gluttonous.”
The nickname was a reflection of his deep humility. He never sought recognition, only to carry Christ wherever he went.
“Deo Gratias” Was His Constant Prayer
Felix greeted everyone with the words Deo gratias, Latin for “Thanks be to God.” Over time, people began calling him that.
He gave thanks in every moment, whether receiving bread or facing ridicule. His gratitude became contagious, and his joyful spirit turned everyday encounters into moments of grace.
Saints Knew His Holiness
St. Felix was a friend of St. Philip Neri and admired by St. Charles Borromeo. Both recognized in him a rare purity of heart and a life rooted in prayer, simplicity, and service.
Rome Mourned His Death
When Felix died in 1587, the streets of Rome were filled with mourners. The people had come to love this humble Capuchin friar who embodied the Gospel so completely.
In 1712, Pope Clement XI canonized him. He remains a beloved saint, patron of children, the poor, and those striving to live with humility and trust in God.
The Enduring Legacy of St. Felix
St. Felix of Cantalice shows us that sainthood doesn’t require status or talent. It requires surrender. Holiness is found in joyful service, deep gratitude, and a heart fully given to God.
St. Felix of Cantalice, pray for us. Deo gratias!
